My Freebirth Story

A Friday Afternoon Surprise

It was a cozy Friday afternoon, and I was curled up on the couch with my daughter, watching Cinderella. That’s when I noticed the tightening in my belly every time I lay on my right side. It was steady enough that I texted my husband, “The baby might come tonight!” He jokingly told me to at least wait until he got home from work.

The rest of the day, I soaked in every moment with my daughter, knowing our lives were about to change. By the time my husband got home, we shared dinner—burgers and fries, of course (my usual pregnancy craving)—and I tried to relax, conserving energy for what felt like the start of something.

Early Labor

Contractions came and went all evening, but they weren’t overwhelming. I even drifted off to sleep. Around 1 a.m., I woke up to much stronger surges, three minutes apart. I called my midwife, who encouraged me to check if I could feel the baby’s head. When I couldn’t, she suggested I call back in an hour if things changed.

Shortly after I called my mom, who was planning to help with our daughter and hopefully be there for the birth. We decided it was time for her to come over.

Things Get Intense

Suddenly, I felt freezing cold and jumped in the shower, hoping the water would help like it did with my first birth—but it didn’t. Shivering, I put on pajamas and fuzzy socks, then climbed into bed. Suddenly, the contractions grew so strong that I couldn’t help but roar through them.

By 3:30 a.m., I called my midwife again. Still, no sign of the baby’s head, but my body told me otherwise. Feeling confused and frustrated I instructed my husband to start filling the birth pool. I needed some kind of relief and soaking in warm water was hopefully going to work this time.

Moments later, I got on the yoga ball and felt the baby moving down with every sway. My body began pushing on its own. I yelled to my husband, “I’m pushing!” to which he (slightly panicked) shouted back, “Well, you better stop!”—but there was no stopping.

An Unplanned Bedroom Birth

After a couple of pushes, I waddled to my nightstand for a sip of mineral water, then laid down. Facing my mom through a contraction, I asked, “I can do this, right?” She smiled and reassured me, “Yes, you can.”

And then it happened—in one strong, calm push, my baby girl came rushing into the world, pink and crying. I sat up, the most present and peaceful I’ve ever felt, and brought her to my chest.

The Afterglow

My husband came racing upstairs as my mom shouted, “The baby, the baby!” Amid the chaos, all I could do was stare into my daughter’s eyes. Time stood still.

After a few minutes passed we called the midwife. She stayed on the phone with us for a little while, holding a soothing presence for me as the flood of hormones took over my body. About 10 minutes later, with her guidance, my husband proudly helped deliver the placenta. We laughed, cried, and kept saying, “Did that really just happen?”

When the midwives arrived, they tucked in with us—sharing tea, soup, mineral drinks, and energy bites—while we retold the whirlwind story. After the cord stopped pulsating, my husband cut the cord, and I snuggled back into bed in fresh sheets, robe, and pajamas with my new baby.

Sisters Meet for the First Time

As the sun rose, my oldest daughter woke up. My husband gently prepared her before she came into the room. Shy at first, she whispered, “Baby,” then repeated it again and again, filled with wonder. Watching my two girls meet for the first time was pure magic.

A Birth Full of Surprise

We spent that first hour as a family of four in awe—laughing, crying, and replaying the night’s events. What we thought would be a long labor turned into a fast, powerful, and unforgettable experience that brought our baby girl earthside in the most unexpected way.

Encouragement For All Mama’s

Looking back, my second daughter’s birth was nothing like I expected. What started as a calm Friday afternoon with my toddler turned into a fast, powerful, and unplanned birth in the early hours of the morning. It was raw, intense, and beautiful all at once.

If there’s one thing I took away from this experience, it’s that our bodies know what to do. Even in the moments of doubt, when I wondered if I could really handle it, my body carried me through and my baby arrived safely, exactly how she was meant to.

To every pregnant mama reading this: you are capable. Whether your birth unfolds slowly or quickly, whether it goes according to plan or takes you by surprise, trust that your body was designed for this. You are stronger than you think, and your baby’s arrival will be one of the most powerful moments of your life.

Stay rooted & own your power,

Haylee
